Traffic & Safety

Following collaboration with our local Councillors, MPP Michelle Cooper, MPP Stephanie Smyth, the early opening of the underground pedestrian walkway connected to Cedarvale Station (formerly Eglinton West) was advanced as a priority. Metrolinx, in conjunction with the TTC, officially opened the walkway on November 16, 2025, providing pedestrians with direct underground access to Line 1 and eliminating the need to cross the Allen Road ramps at street level, significantly improving both safety and convenience.

Importantly, this redirection of pedestrian traffic is expected to enable adjusted signal timing that adds more time to northbound Allen Road vehicular movements, helping to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at the intersection.

CUVCG Advocacy Report to the Province - The CUVCG has published and distributed a report calling for provincial responsibility and involvement in the planning, management, and long-term functioning of the AllenRoad Corridor.  The report underscores several key points:

·     TheAllen Road is not a local street but rather a regional transportation corridor carrying approximately 80,000 vehicles per day to and from provincial highways and broader regional networks.

·     Among the 5 municipal expressways in the GTHA, the Allen has one of the highest traffic densities (vehicles per kilometre), underscoring its significance as a provincial-scale connector deserving of provincial management and investment—like the Gardiner and DVP.

·     The Crosstown LRT is a provincial transportation initiative, built by Metrolinx, a provincial agency.  As such, the province shares sharesresponsibility for the failed reinstated design of the Allen &Eglinton intersection and should play a direct role in its expedited redesign and reconstruction.

·      The Allen Road Environmental Assessment (EA)—mandated in multiple planning studies, including Eglinton Connects—was cancelled by the City of Toronto in 2016. Because the EA was a joint provincial–municipal process under Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act, its cancellation effectively halted the long-term planning necessary for a corridor of this importance.
